Harmonising design through a home

We live and work in a part of the country where there are wonderful period homes – some dating back as far as Tudor times but there are also plenty of beautiful Georgian, Victorian and Arts & Crafts style properties as well as stunning modern houses. Figura has gained a wealth of experience from all the different styles of properties and an understanding of the challenges, and joys, of incorporating all the essentials of modern life into buildings that were originally built for a much simpler time.

It's vital to consider not just how a room might be used – but also how it fits within the home.

At the start of the Figura design process two vital considerations set the tone for anything we create. The first is how a family plans to use their home – both now and in the future. The second is to look at the home itself and to consider the period it was built, the flow of the rooms, the materials used in its construction and so on.

This second element is critical because it’s that which enables us to consider harmonising design through the home and to create rooms for our clients that really can last a lifetime. Cleverly styling our designs to be always sensitive to the property as a whole is what ensures your Figura kitchen, bedroom, library or snug should never date and will always look relevant.

Taking the period style of your home into account

No matter the age of your home - from early period to modern house – the overall style of the home can never be ignored. That’s because any attempt to contradict the period of a house is more likely to result in a room that will quickly date.

This makes it vital that any fitted furniture should, in some way, reflect the style of the house. We’re of course not talking about slavishly recreating a Georgian kitchen – that would not be appropriate to the way we all live today. But considering and incorporating period references and features while making sure that modern additions are ‘in keeping’ really can make all the difference.

Materials play their part in timeless design

Choice of materials is also key to ensuring harmony through a home. Not just the materials for the fitted furniture but also flooring, wall colour, surfaces and more. As an example, any change in flooring from a hall to a kitchen should be subtle with, if necessary, a wooden threshold between the two. Similarly, if wall colours in adjoining rooms are carefully thought through, attention will be drawn to the beauty of the colour chosen rather than an obvious change in mood.

Bringing cohesiveness to a whole house project

For whole house projects, ways to harmonise flooring, surfaces, internal joinery, architraves, skirting and coving, internal doors, staircases, and door furniture are all worth close consideration. As you move through the home these features can be pulled together to be proportionate to the rooms in terms of scale and to share elements of styling with one another and the house as a whole. This brings a home design together and adds a feeling of elegance and sophistication, ensuring a natural flow from one room to the next.

The Figura approach to harmonising your home.

Whether we’re working on a single room or a whole house we design spaces which are sympathetic to one another even if they are of different scales or for different uses. In a bedroom and dressing room this can be a simple case of creating items of furniture in the bedroom which match in style those designed for the dressing room. In a kitchen it might be about taking inspiration from other features in your home to ensure the new furniture feels like it’s always belonged.

We also carefully consider how altering a space might improve its flow – sometimes even a small change can make an enormous difference to how a room functions.

And we never forget the importance of the finishing touches!

Fitted furniture, joinery, surfaces and wall colour goes a long way to harmonising your home. The final flourish though is in the choice of soft furnishings, colours, textures and styles. Our in-house interiors team means we’re able to advise on every detail, ensuring harmony throughout your home.
